The tomb is divided into three chambers, with the middle chamber being used to place the remains before their bones are washed. When it was first built, the eastern chamber was used to bury the king and queen after their bones were washed, and the western chamber was used to bury a limited number of family members who are inscribed on the Tamaudun Monument in the garden in front of the tomb. It was heavily damaged during the Battle of Okinawa, but restoration work began in 1974 and took more than three years, returning it to its former appearance and remaining as it is today.
